Secretary, Donald H. Rumsfeld, 71, made a surprise visit to the Abu Ghraib
prison camp in Iraq. Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller gave Rumsfeld a tour
of the facility. Rumsfeld met with US Army leaders including Gen.
Ricardo Sanchez, Commander of the coalition forces in Iraq, and delivered
a speech to US soldiers. Rumsfeld was accompanied on the trip by
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Richard Myers, and Dr. William Luti,
Under-Secretary of Defense.
Fighting in Gaza Strip
Israeli forces continued to battle Palestinian terrorists in fierce fighting
in the Gaza Strip as 12 Palestinians were killed. The remains
of six Israeli soldiers killed May 11 were returned to Israel by representatives
of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society about 3 AM.
Ghandi Widow Defeats India Prime Minister
Sonia Gandhi, the widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, led the
Congress party to victory and forced the resignation of Prime Minister,
Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Sonia Gandhi, 57, is now in line to become
the next Prime Minister. Her 34-year-old son, Rahul Gandhi, also
won a Parliament seat. Sonia Gandhi's former husband, Rajiv Gandhi,
who was assassinated in 1991 by Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels, was the
son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi was assassinated
while in power in 1984.

departed. Four tornadoes were reported in Colorado and one in Louisiana.
